Creating a Financially Successful Healthcare Practice is One of the Most Healing Things You Can Do—For You and Your Patients

Having a successful clinic is one of the MOST healing things you can do. It's not always about eating well and taking supplements and herbs.

It's about valuing yourself enough to earn a really good living WHILE living in alignment with the principles of holistic health: everything is connected. Yes, money is vitality. It doesn’t just happen in the treatment room.

Here's the thing--your healthcare practice will always mirror your deepest personal patterns.

Patterns like over-giving from a place of feeling "not enough". Sublimating your own needs because you're afraid you'll be rejected or abandoned--by patients or team members. Patterns like lack of self- worth and default committing to being broke because your confidence can't take making clear requests of patients or team members. Patterns of poor boundaries because it feels so good to be "needed" that you conflate it with being "wanted".

Sorry, but I see this frequently.

Then the crash that comes from these patterns: resentment, feeling under-appreciated, exhausted, burned out. Why TF am I working so hard for these people?! Don't they see how much I CARE? Having a business is So Hard. I'm overwhelmed.

I mean--this sentiment is rampant among acupunctursists, naturopaths, chiropractors, Integrative MD’s, therapists, and Nurse Practitioners. No shade, seriously. It's just the reality of the professional landscape. And the patterns we have as human beings (everyone has patterns).

And these personal patterns show up in your business. It's a reaction chain where your internal beliefs and patterns become your default business strategy. And without acknowledging and transforming these patterns--resentment, frustration, and overwhelm (and low pay) will keep showing up.

I initially started my own acupuncture practice this way--and each time I hit a ceiling in growth--this was the root of it.

By addressing and transforming the internal patterns of:

  • 1. overgiving from a source of "not enough"

  • 2. disappearing my own needs as I grew my team and patient numbers

I was able to grow my cash based practice to 150 patients a week (in Kansas--not a wealthy state, and yes, there were ten other acupuncturists in a town of 100K). I also built a fantastic team of committed, engaged, effective humans.

By addressing my own patterns of "not enough" "I suck" "I need to be needed"-- I was able to create a clinic that embodied collaborative care, human centered leadership, and space for my own needs. In short, a sustainable, very profitable, nourishing business--for me and my team.

The default patterns that I started my practice with were family inheritances--I came by them honestly (as I'm sure you do too).

And if I had never addressed them, no "system" was going to save me. It's why cookie cutter coaching so often doesn't get lasting results. And it’s exactly why I do personalized coaching that honors your unique patterns.

Because internal patterns are the real drivers when it comes to business and clinic growth.

I work with so many clinic owners who are frustrated that "the system" or "the recipe" they thought would save their practice doesn't end up working for THEM.

Why? Because success is not a one size fits all formula. I can't tell you how many of my own clients have worked with other coaches and it "didn't work" because there was no addressing the root cause. No room for personalization and building safety in their nervous system for effective, tangible internal pattern change. No healing as a feature of the business coaching. Business and healing are connected. It’s all connected—you know this as a thoughtful healthcare provider, as a mindful clinician—committed to fostering healing.

When the underlying pattern is committed to "familiar" it guarantees a pattern of under-earning, over-giving, and running on fumes when your business is literally helping people feel vital and healthy. Ironic, right?

It’s not sustainable. It’s the root cause of burnout, cancellations, retention issues, even team drama.

The work of coaching is healing work. Yes, even business coaching. Especially that.

Because when you transform the internal pattern, you can finally line up the external systems, policies, and conversations that support you.

Here's what I witness as possible when my own thoughtful clients do the work of transforming their default internal patterns:

  • Earn an income that empowers them and provides them with deep security and consistency

  • Hire dream Associates and committed admin teams

  • Have record-breaking weeks, months, years--while going home resourced and present--not tanked out and cranky, drained by their practice

  • Take maternity leave or family vacations without panic

  • Buy buildings for their clinic--in rural AND expensive urban areas

  • Grow into Clinic Director to focus on business development and team leadership

  • Have incredible patients retention centered on collaborative care and mutual respect

  • Change their practice to fully align with their values, fascination and skills

Are systems important? OMG yes. Flexible systems that honor your needs. I teach systems to my own clients. But more important than the systems are the deep, familiar pattern transformations that I help facilitate. You don't need to work with me to do this kind of transformation.

I'm writing this to encourage you to look deeply at your own internal patterns as a source of your business concerns.

Business is one of the MOST healing things you can do when you approach it this way. A successful business provides you with agency, an opportunity to honor your needs, a deep connection to fulfilling your purpose while helping people feel better. Having a good income is power, in our culture. Power, potency. Choices. The ability to RECEIVE in exchange for the care you provide.

If your practice is slow, if your team is messy, if you are overwhelmed by it all, if you understand your business as un-sustainable, look at your practice from a systemic level, as you would with your patients and clients. Look at the patterns underneath. That's where the healing happens--and it WILL help you in your business.

Having a healthcare business does not mean healing is limited to your patients, or to to the treatment room, or by modeling perfect diet and lifestyle choices. It's about HEALING the patterns that brought you to study this medicine in the first place.

The world needs resourced, well paid healthcare provider. Nourished acupuncturists. Resourced naturopaths. Supported Integrative MD’s and NP’s. Tended therapists. Aligned chiropractors. THIS is how to make that a reality.

Ultimately it comes down to this question I meditate on daily--how TF can we make this healthcare a more financially sustainable career for holistic healthcare providers who are deeply committed to their patients and vitality? And how to do that in a way that honors the principles of this holistic medicine--not as a necessary evil, but as an integral part of the whole ecosystem. It's possible.

Yes, for you.
